How to file a USPS claim
File a USPS claim online or by mail. Each claim must be submitted within a specified timeframe and must include the following:
- Initial mailing receipt
- evidence of insurance
- value of item shipped
- any damage incurred
We advice that you prepare the recommended evidence and save them until USPS resolves your claim. The individual initiating the claim should possess the initial mailing receipt.
CHECK FILING PERIOD
If your package arrives damaged you can file a claim up to 60 days after the mailing date.
If your package is lost, the filing period is listed below:
Note: the filing period is based on the mailing date on your receipt.
By Mail
Please include the following documents
- Tracking or label number
- Evidence of insurance purchased
- Proof of value
- Proof of damage
Filing a USPS claim Online
To file a claim online, create an account and log into your free USPS.com account. Your claim case number will be associated with your account and there you will be able to check your Claim History for any updates - USPS usually sends claims decisions within 5-10 days but it depends on whether your package is damaged or lost.
